Redundancy in live event production means every critical signal exists twice: every camera ISO and the programme output recorded on two devices, on different media, ideally on different power; two independent streaming chains on separate connectivity; and an audio path engineered so a platform’s copyright detection cannot kill your broadcast. There is no second take at a live event, so the workflow has to quietly absorb anything that fails. This is how we design it, layer by layer, and what to ask any production company about theirs.

Layer 1: Recording

Primary and backup recording on every source: each camera ISO, the clean programme, the dirty programme with graphics, presentation feeds and audio stems. The devices differ, the media differs, and where possible the power differs, so no single failure can take both. We have never had to use the backup in anger on a client session, and we have also never had a client lose a session: those two facts are related.

Layer 2: Streaming

Two encoders, two paths to the internet: dedicated wired primary, bonded cellular backup, like the 5G primary with a multi-SIM failover ring we ran for the ITTF AGM’s global broadcast. Layer 3: Audio

The broadcast takes its own mix, not the room PA feed, and on any event with commercial music, a stream-safe path keeps licensed tracks out of the platform’s earshot: Facebook and YouTube copyright systems pull streams mid-show without appeal, and the time to solve that is at the rig, not at the gala. We run separate clean and dirty programme ISOs for the same reason: every downstream use of the content stays flexible.

Layer 4: Power and People

Control-area kit splits across supplies so one tripped circuit cannot silence everything; critical recorders sit on battery-backed power. And the least discussed redundancy is human: crew who have seen failure before do not freeze at it. What Redundancy Costs, and What It Saves

Duplicate recording adds a small percentage to a production budget: recorders, media and prep time. Against it, price a keynote that exists nowhere because one card corrupted, or a stream that died at the CEO’s opening line.
